ORGAN RECITALS
April to October
A series of seven monthly recitals by leading organists.
23 APRIL ALCOCK ORGAN RECITAL
Thomas Trotter Birmingham City Organist
Thomas Trotter, internationally-renowned performer, teacher and Birmingham City Organist, gives the opening recital in Salisbury Cathedral’s Organ Recital Series 2008 performing the prestigious Alcock Recital on Wednesday 23 April at 7.30pm.
His inspired programme features music by five composers of a similar generation who write in completely different styles - Alcock, Bridge, Holloway, Messiaen and Stravinsky.
Daniel Cook, Assistant Director of Music at the cathedral and responsible for the series, said, “As the recital is dedicated to the illustrious Sir Walter Alcock who was Organist & Master of the Choristers at Salisbury Cathedral from 1916-1947, Thomas Trotter opens the evening by performing Alcock’s rousing Introduction and Passacaglia with its four note tuba blast! Frank Bridge’s gentle Allegretto grazioso – Andante con moto from his collection of ‘Six Organ Pieces’ follows. 2008 is the 100th anniversary of Messiaen’s birth and in commemoration of this Trotter performs the incredibly beautiful four movement L’Ascensions written between 1933-34. Holloway’s little known Scherzo serves as a light interlude before Trotter brings his recital to a jubilant conclusion performing his own arrangements of three movements from Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka – Danse Russe, Chez Petrushka and La semaine grasse.”
