Cathedral Trust
Today we in our turn have a responsibility to pass this miraculous building on to our children and grandchildren so that future generations can be moved to turn to God and discover a vision of his holiness and glory.”
Under the Presidency of H R H The Prince of Wales the great work to repair the spire and tower of Salisbury Cathedral was completed in 1995. At that point the trustees of the Spire Appeal decided to turn their attention to the remainder of the Cathedralís fabric. At their instigation, Salisbury Cathedral Trust was formed in order to fund the long term repair and restoration of the Cathedral.
The repair of the West Front of the Cathedral took five years, and a celebration of the completion of the work was one of the Cathedral's main events of the Millennium. The many figures that are portrayed on the Front have each required careful work by stonemasons. The newly-restored West Front is a fine sight and one which every visitor to the Cathedral is able to admire.
Work that is still to be completed within the cathedral's major repair programme includes the north side of the building and the north porch; the latter being due for completion in January 2008. The cost of all the work within the major repair programme that has still to be undertaken is £13 million. Salisbury Cathedral Trust funds its share of the repair costs from legacies, donations and interest on the limited capital that it holds. The main source of income is from legacies. In the current financial year newly received legacies have provided £400,000 towards the Trust's expenditure on the repair of the cathedral.
The Trust continues to seek funds with which to continue this work, and it is clear that a steady supply of money will be required if the cathedral is to survive into the indefinite future. As the maintenance of the building is a long, steady operation, the most suitable form of provision for its survival are from the sources below. You are urged to provide for the survival of this great building. All currencies may be used for all forms of donation less gift aid, which is constrained by tax arrangements in Great Britain.
Lump Sum to the Endowment Fund. This fund is designed to hold a capital sum from which the interest can be applied to the Trust's work in the longer term. Should you feel that you can contribute to it, please send a cheque (in any currency) to Salisbury Cathedral Trust, 65 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EN.
Gift Aid Donation. If you pay tax in the United Kingdom, you can make a donation through gift aid and this has the advantage that additional money is added by the government to the sum provided in your donation. Click here for Gift Aid form.
A Legacy in favour of the Work of the Trust. If you are able to include the Trust among any charitable bequests that you may make in your will then this is a particularly effective way of funding the Trust's work to maintain the cathedral into the indefinite future. Please note that legacies should state the name of the Trust and its address which are: Salisbury Cathedral Trust, 65 The Close, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP1 2EN. A legacy statement follows. Please show this to your legal advisor to include your bequest to the Trust when he or she is drafting your will. For additional information please contact the Trust Director.
